haiku history: Bashō & the dragonfly poem
When Bashō was 30 years old, he started a haiku school of his own and took, as his first student, a rich merchant’s son who later became well known as Kikaku. One day, Bashō and Kikaku were walking through fields, watching dragonflies darting through the air. The excited boy made a 17-syllable verse: Red dragonflies!   Take off their wings,      and they are pepper pods! Bashō responded...
